A Typical Lesson
Lessons are generally structured by first beginning with a brief body/voice warm up: stretching and vocalizations, followed by a series of singing exercises, after which we work on music. Overall goals of lessons are to develop an understanding of body awareness, breath control, and sound placement, as well as comfort and confidence with singing.
Music
I work from a great repertoire of songs, including:
- American songbook standards by Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers/Hammerstein, etc.
- Classic jazz tunes performed by Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.
- 60s & 70s pop, rock, country and soul (The Beatles, Carole King, Mama's & Papas, Patsy Cline, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Bill Withers, etc)
- 80s, 90s and contemporary tunes (Tom Petty, The Pretenders, U2, Bangles, Heart, Blondie, Adele, Taylor Swift, White Stripes, KT Tunstall, etc)
Please note: Lessons are an hour long for all adults. For children and teens, 45 minutes is generally appropriate. I do not recommend lessons for children under the age of 8.
